The Gospel of Thomas

Saying 3

Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the kingdom is in heaven,' then the birds of heaven will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside you and it is outside you.

"When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you dwell in poverty, and you are poverty."

The complete Gospel of Thomas in Coptic was discovered with the rest of the Gnostic texts in Nag Hammadi in 1945. Widely regarded by scholars to be the original sayings of Jesus, it contains many sayings that do not always agree with traditional Christian doctrine.

The above quoted saying says that the kingdom of heaven in within us and outside of us. To know this kingdom, we have to know our true self.

It resonates deeply within me.

This also resonates very much with me. Thanks for the quotes and link. I grew up with Jesus as my only teacher figure and have struggled with the church I was raised in. The Gospel of Thomas seems to be a different account of Jesus' teachings altogether. I rather like it.

I'm not a christian, but I do know that the gospel of Thomas is certainly not "widely regarded to be the original sayings of Jesus". Did you get your "facts" from Dan Brown? His research is shoddy stuff.

That depends on who you ask.

I very much doubt that there are any original sayings of Jesus, or indeed if he existed.

Agagooga, if you mean Jesus Christ, the Son of God, from a virgin birth, who raised the dead, died and was resurrected, then yeah, there is absolutely no historical evidence that there is such a man/god. But if you mean Yeshu from Nazereth, then there is wide consensus among scholars that such a man lived and taught in Jerusalem. You may want to check out the Jesus Seminar. They are historians who attempt to sieve out what was actually spoken by Yeshu in the 4 gospels from what had been part of the developing tradition and added into the scriptures.
